hello
my name is owen and I am 8 years old . It all started when mom told me I had a appointment with a orthodontist. what is a orthodontist I said you will see said mom so we got in the car and drove to the office. we did not like it. I REPEAT WE DID NOT LIKE IT so we drove to another office. we did not like that one either we drove to a third one. third times the charmer we liked it so maybe mom liked it but I did not. They told me I had a crossbite and I needed a palate expander. So here I am. I am going to write about how I am feeling before during and after my expander and maybe it can help another kid who needs one.
Hey Owen! I wanted you to know that I had to go to the orthodontist too so I can relate to what you are going through. I know it can be scary but having the perfect smile and healthy teeth makes it all worth it! I can't wait to hear all about your next appointment. This site is a really cool idea!! Keep up the good work and hang in there. I know you can do it! I love you! -Alyssa
ReplyDeleteDear Owen,
ReplyDeleteWhat a brave boy you are to start this blog about things that may be good for you but you are afraid of. Think about it this way. Some day you may want to jump off a high diving board and you climb all the way up there and poof! You don't want to do it - OR - WORSE YET, you do a belly flop. BUT, you did it.
It is natural for you to be afraid of something you aren't familiar with. Your Mom and Dad made sure they found someone they trust - and now, when you are ready, you will hopefully trust that orthodontist also. I will enjoy reading your posts. Know that I love you always.
Aunt Kayte
PS Uncle Marc would be scared of things sometimes too. So am I.
Hi Owen! We haven't talked in a long time, but I've missed you and I'm glad I can read about your experiences. Do you know that you are one of the most creative people I have ever met? Creative people are good at getting through the tough stuff, because they know how to look at things from different angles. If anybody can figure out a way to look at this experience from the bright side, it is you. Keep writing! Love, Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteOwen, I can't wait to read about your experiences! You are such an awesome kid, and your orthodontist is very lucky to have you for a patient. I remember in Pre-K that you just loved learning about the weather. Maybe you could think of this adventure as a wonderful opportunity to learn about your mouth and teeth! I will be thinking of you and remembering you in my prayers. Lots of love, Owen. Miss Debbie
ReplyDeleteOwen,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog. I know that you are a brave person. I know this because I rode the Mouse Trap with you at Hershey Park. While your mom and I were screaming for our mothers, you remained very calm as you expressed your dislike for the ride. It sounds like you are taking the same approach with your orthodontist experience - you are vocalizing your concerns to get you through it. I am looking forward to reading more about your palatal adventures.

Owen, your big cousin Caleb ha an expander when he was about your age. We went to a dentist that went to school with me . He was a wrestler , like your Poppa. He knew Caleb was nerbous, but he took his time and was very gentle. Caleb did not like his expander , at first , but he got use to it. Now he has very straight teeth, and they match right up! I will get him to sen you a message , or if you want, you can call him. I know you are a very intelligent young man, and will make the right decision. Good Luck!

OK, so Aunt Yeya always likes distractions. I thought I'd direct you to the Palatine Hill, one of the seven hills surrounding Rome and actually housing the cave where Romulus and Remus were found being raised by wolves. However, the name of the hill has nothing to do with Palatal and the wikipedia story had nothing but fighting and bloodshed between brothers. . . so don't go there.
ReplyDeleteThen, I found this nifty website about Palatal Whistling - something you can try - where you make the sound by putting your tongue up on the roof of your mouth, instead of puckering your lips and blowing through them. Here's a you-tube video of a guy who's actually pretty good Hacki Tamás http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7bpqp7o4rQ (you'll probably need to cut and paste this site into another one).
Knowing what a clever fellow you are and truly your Father's son, I thought you might try to write a poem about your palatal adventure and found a rhyming site that gives you some words that might rhyme with palatal. Some are pretty good, like palpable and caracol; others not so good, like unsustainable and illegible. Anyway, here's that site http://www.b-rhymes.com/rhyme/word/palatal
And then, there's always bad tooth jokes:
What game do you play if you don't take care of your teeth? Tooth (truth) or Consequences(1).
What's the best thing to put into a pizza? Your teeth (1).
A little boy was taken to the dentist. It was discovered that he had a cavity that would have to be filled.
"Now, young man," asked the dentist, "what kind of filling would you like for that tooth?"
"Chocolate, please," replied the youngster(2).
OK, so that's all for now. I love you. You've been through tough things before (like your tonsils - remember the sherbert?) and come out with flying colors. It won't be easy, but worthwhile things rarely are. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. How do you accomplish the longest journey? One step at a time. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll be done.
Others have said it, but I'll say it again - You're one awesome kid. (OK, James is another awesome kid, too.)
Know that I love you and am very proud of you. OK, and one last thing, here's a dance you can learn in your spare time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZmkU5Pg1sw&feature=g-all-xit
The Yeya
PS: They made me put some goofy letters in at the bottom of the post to prove I wasn't a robot. How'd they know I wasn't a reading, typing robot? Huh?

Owen this is such a cool idea. You might help another kid who is having a hard time with the same thing or maybe some other procedure. I know how smart you are and love to learn things. Ask your dentist lots of questions (unless your mouth is full and you can't) and you will then know all about this process of having healthy teeth. You have a HUGE family who all love you and are rooting for you. Think of it as a job you need to do even though you don't want to. Sometimes in life we have to do things we don't like and it always makes us a better person. I love and miss you and your brother, Mom and Dad and Muffin. Keep up the good work. MIMA
ReplyDeleteOwen, You are such a big cousin. My children look up to you sooo much! Artie cannot wait to see you at the wedding coming up. First, you are so brave by going through all of this. When I was a little older than you, I had to get braces and I was terrified but I got through it and it made me stronger. All I used to think about was the more it hurt, the more milkshakes I got to eat and the less vegetables I had to eat - HAHAHA... The Babinskis love you so much and we will see you soon. Hang in there and just make sure that after every appointment, you tell your mom that you need a big enormous milkshake or some ice cream. Love you!
ReplyDeleteHi Owen ,
ReplyDeleteSteph, Kevin and Sarah ALL had to wear Palate expanders. It must run in the family! They were about your age, too. Nobody liked it at all, but they realized that they had to endure it for a little while. We know you will be brave and let the orthodontist put that annoying thing in your mouth. I am sure your parents will be so proud of you, they will give you a reward. You should start thinking about it.... Maybe a trip to Sweet Frog?? Yummy!
